Last thoughts on the Warner Theater production of Liberty

IMG_6199

The Warner Theater gave Liberty the opportunity to be physically realized in grand fashion, with detailed attention to the costume, light and stage design. This production blew me away by its sheer magnificence.

The theatre itself is first-class in visual beauty and quality of equipment, The people were also top-notch; all of the techs, admins, ushers and other behind-the-scenes folks were great and made us feel at home.

Collectively, the cast was serious and dedicated, and gave it’s all in performance. They truly shined. As Liberty herself, Madeline Brewer handled her larger-than-life role with grace. I was very moved by Stephanie Haring’s Emma, which was deep and heart-warming. Bif Carrington and Vince McCoy, as the champions of public opinion, gave clear and decisive arguments for their sides of the immigration debate as they both justifiably clamored for show MVP. I won’t mention everyone. They were all talented, capable players who as an ensemble, proved to be an incredibly solid base for this show to build upon.

With Liberty, John Bonanni has opened the Warner to possibilities that can only be realized with new works. He is literally setting the stage for a new era in theater, by giving new writers a place to experiment and see a project to its full potential, all the while giving the community the opportunity to join in the fun.

I must commend Igor Goldin for his enlightened direction, Dana Leslie Goldstein for producing a cohesive and driven script, Jeff Lodin and Bryan Crook for their dynamic vocal and instrumental arrangements and guidance. The band rocked. And thanks to all at the Warner Theatre for giving Liberty a home, a voice, and a world of possibilities!

Beautiful now available on cdBaby.com

Beautiful is an eclectic album, recorded with a live band, featuring serious old-school rock, gritty guitar riffs, as well as more subdued numbers.

I’d been writing songs, honing that craft for a long time, and I had come to a place in my life where I could see that everything really is beautiful. I wanted to push that limit with the music, specifically by pairing incongruous, feedback-driven guitar riffs with the more traditional sound of a clean acoustic guitar. It naturally gelled, infusing raw musical elements together and recording live with talented musicians.

Mixed and engineered in Bridgehampton, Long Island with New York-area musicians: Michael Mazzaraco, Joe Haines and Ed Drohan, the album leans heavily on guitar and bass, infusing keyboards from Joe Delia on three tracks and a spiritual sitar from Rick Birmingham on This is My Temple.

Rough Cut of Beautiful

Nothing fancy here, just recording off my computer’s mic and internal camera. Check out how the lights are reflecting off my guitar. I didn’t plan it but it is a pretty cool effect.

An acoustic version of Beautiful (with guitar solo) is on my album Future Past Present, and the full-band version is the title track on, you guessed it, Beautiful.

Mixing “High on Love”

Mixing “High on Love” from the album Beautiful, at Massive Studios in Bridgehampton, NY. This was a particularly fun one to record – all live, no overdubs and only some modest cleanup. It was a pleasure to record with these guys – Michael Mazzaracco, Smokin’ Joe Haines and my old friend Ed Drohan (he wasn’t there for this video, he had to go home for fish taco night).

The final recording is available at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/jongoldstein
